Banda Barrio is a music creation project aimed at students in 1st and 2nd ESO from secondary schools near the Cerezo neighborhood. The workshop was developed in collaboration with the Sevilla Acoge Association, responsible for training the group, mediation, and communication with families.
The project sought to offer students musical education through an informal approach, based on remixing traditional music and using electronic instruments. Over 6 months (January-June 2021), once a week after school hours, students experimented with musical composition using loops and DJ techniques to create their own pieces and musical sessions. The project has allowed them to begin articulating their experiences and perspectives through electronic music, related to the neighborhood where they live, their personal stories, and cultural backgrounds.
On Saturday, March 27th, the students participating in the project made their debut as DJs at the Punto Latino restaurant. To prepare for this session, we had been working on remixing and electronic music based on folklore for the first three months of the year. We also conducted research into musical memories by interviewing women from the Nicaraguan Women's Association.
With the songs that emerged, fragments of their interviews, and new electronic tracks from their countries, the students prepared sets to play at the association itself, located in the Cerezo neighborhood, just before Easter. We remember with great joy this day, a celebration filled with music and food, which ended with an excellent Nicaraguan meal prepared by the association themselves.
The project has been developed once a week on Thursdays from 16:30 to 18:00h. Initially the development was going to be 20 sessions, but as the workshop progressed and we saw the needs and lack of computers at home by the students, we considered it appropriate to make 5 extra sessions of reinforcement, especially in the final phase of development of musical projects. These sessions were intended for students who did not have a computer at home, but the attendance has been general.
In total, 28 sessions were held (23 per calendar + 5 reinforcement sessions) plus the final presentation day of the musical projects, held in the school playground on Saturday, June 26th. The sessions have been organized in two phases, you can see the complete development here:
If until now we had worked on sound collage, this time we dove into the idea of graphic collage, exploring possible connections with artist Daniel Alonso. The concept was to imagine and create alongside students how album covers would look if they were to release a record with their musical pieces.
The idea was to investigate how to connect musical concepts and graphics, starting a process of creating these imagined album covers. How do we envision the cover of our album? What images could represent me or my music?
This process was an open dialogue between students and the artist, evolving as their musical projects evolved.
We've always wondered about the impact of our workshops on the students and have been interested in informally evaluating their impressions. For this project, we wanted to delve deeper into evaluating our work and collaborated with Beatriz Mac铆as (researcher from the Pablo de Olavide University) and her student In茅s G贸mez.
In茅s accompanied us during the sessions and developed her final master's thesis research on the impact of our methodologies on the students' identity-building processes through music remixing. She explored how these methods, used in educational contexts, can be applied as a case study for intercultural models through musical remixing.
